February 6, 2008– Premier Physician Jack Evans, MD, (Bucyrus Community Hospital) wins CERP Award.
Printed with the permission of the patient.
Seventy-two-year old Mary Ann Ruth arrived at the Bucyrus Emergency Room thinking there must be something wrong with her recent right leg fracture, as she had severe pain and numbness in her leg and hip. Mrs. Ruth was also having some vague chest discomfort but only rated that 1 out of 10 on the pain scale on her arrival. Mary Ann was assigned to Premier Health Care Services’ Emergency Medicine physician Jack Evans, MD, for care. Upon evaluation of Mary Ann, Dr. Evans noted that she had no right foot pulses, severe right hip pain, and some chest pain. Feeling like there may be more to this case then meets the eye, Dr. Evans ordered an immediate CTA (CT Angiogram) of the chest and abdomen and the results showed a TAD (Thoracic Aortic Dissection) that extended into the abdominal aorta.
Mrs. Ruth was transported to Ohio State University Hospital, where she underwent surgery for a repair of the dissection as well as an aortic valve repair. The surgery was successful, and Mrs. Ruth was eventually transferred back to Bucyrus Community Hospital for rehabilitation and then home in late January.
According to ED Medical Director, Larry Lewis, MD, “Dr. Evans is to be commended for his quick thinking and excellent diagnosis. Mrs. Ruth had no obvious risk factors for TAD, and one could have easily been fooled into thinking this was related to her recent fracture.”
Mary Ann Ruth and her husband have expressed their tremendous gratitude for Dr. Evans and his great work. His quick thinking and careful diagnosis saved her life. Dr. Evans was nominated by Larry Lewis, MD – Medical Director, Bucyrus Community Hospital.
