Kevin Ahern, MD, Appointed Fellow in Hospital Medicine

Kevin Ahern, MD Dr. Kevin Ahern, the Medical Director of Premier’s Hospitalist program at Springfield Regional Medical Center has been inducted as an inaugural Fellow into The Society of Hospital Medicine. Dr. Ahern is also a Board Member of PHCS.

The induction ceremony, which takes place in May in Chicago, honors only 500 physicians who are the first to be designated Fellows in the specialty of Hospitalist Medicine. Dr. Ahern has achieved this honor by distinguishing himself amongst the approximately 25,000 physicians who serve as hospitalists across the nation. Criteria for this designation included five years of exemplary performance as a practicing hospitalist, the endorsement of other active members of the SHM, and exemplary performance in the areas of quality improvement and leadership within the specialty.

The Society of Hospital Medicine, which is bestowing this award on Dr. Ahern, is the premier national organization representing hospitalists across the country. Hospitalist medicine is the fastest growing specialty in the U.S. Prior to the creation of this Fellow designation, hospitalists had no way to distinguish themselves from their colleagues. The FHM designation gives hospitalists meeting the society’s criteria an opportunity to set themselves apart, and recognizes the unusual and significant contributions of Fellows such as Dr. Ahern to their specialty. Dr. Ahern, as a board certified family physician, is part of an even more exclusive group receiving this designation, as the majority of the inaugural class of Fellows specialize in internal medicine.

Dr. Ahern joined Premier in August 2003 and has been a member of our Board since 2006. I cannot think of another individual more deserving of this designation than Kevin Ahern. Kevin has served in an exemplary manner as the Medical Director of Hospitalist Services in Springfield and Urbana for the last five years. He has also provided very high-level contributions to the strategic direction of Premier through his participation on the Premier Board. I congratulate Kevin on being selected as part of this exclusive group of practicing hospitalists.
