On August 3, 2009, Cheryle Rodriguez brought her 11-month-old son, Julian, to the Mercy St. Charles Hospital Emergency Department. Cheryle had been treating an abscess to Julian’s upper left thigh for five days before bringing him to the ED. Julian’s pediatrician had prescribed antibiotics, but they didn’t seem to be working, as the wound was getting worse, and he had a fever. The abscess had grown larger, and he was now more seriously ill with the infection.
Kevin Barcroft, PA, treated Julian. After examination, Kevin determined it would be best to send Julian to Mercy St. Vincent’s Medical Center Pediatrics, where a pediatric surgeon could perform an incision and drainage treatment on the abscess.
In a letter of thanks, Cheryle Rodriguez said, “Kevin arranged a transfer and set up a room at Mercy St. V’s for Julian. At this point, I was scared, but Kevin told me what they would do and why. He explained everything in terms I understood. Once we got to St. V’s, they did exactly what Kevin said they would. Kevin is a great asset to your ED.”
Dan Kandah, DO, ED Medical Director at Mercy St. Charles Hospital, says, “Kevin made the right diagnosis and clinical decision. More importantly, he was able to help the mother understand what the problem was, as well as the needed treatment. He gained her trust and confidence through his sincere care and professionalism. His caring attitude gave the mother great relief in a very stressful situation. In addition, after being sent to a pediatric hospital, Kevin displayed great compassion by calling and speaking to the mother after the surgery. It is for this reason I nominate Kevin for the Jana Banks Award for Clinical Excellence.”
CERP – the Clinical Excellence Recognition Program – highlights Premier Health Care Services health care professionals (Physicians, Physician Assistants, Nurse Practitioners) who have been recognized as having provided excellent clinical care in a specific Emergency Department encounter. Award winners are recognized in the Premier Perspective Newsletter, and a letter acknowledging the award is sent to the CEO, Chief of the Medical Staff, ED Medical Director, and ED Nurse Manager of the facility in which the award winner works the most ED shifts. Nominations for this award may be submitted by anyone, and the forms can be found on the Premier Intranet and submitted to your Premier ED Medical Director. Nominations are taken year-round, and winners are selected by a committee composed of the Chief Development Officer, Chief Executive Officer, and the Chair of the Clinical Services Committee. As a reward, each CERP winner receives a $100 gas card, and an annual winner will be chosen from the winners for a grand prize of $1000.00 travel voucher. In addition, the picture of the practitioner will be posted on a Premier Health Care Services Clinical Excellence Wall of Fame in the Premier corporate offices.
