Ken Fox, MD - ED Medical Director

Premier physician since 2006

Ken Fox, MD

What factors made you decide to work in Emergency Medicine for Premier, rather than Family Practice?

Compared to other Family Practice opportunities, Premier offered several advantages: a 3-4 day work week, an excellent benefits package, no call, a higher salary potential, opportunity for advancement, and flexibility to work overtime. My wife and I were impressed with a physician-owned and operated organization and appreciated personally speaking with the ED Medical Director and Premier’s CEO, Bill Cole, MD, during our interview process. Premier was obviously a very organized and successful company committed to providing quality patient care in the chaotic, red-tape-laced, insurance-infested business of healthcare, while supporting the physicians who are the heart and soul of the company.

How did Premier help you with the transition from a Family Medicine setting to an Emergency Medicine setting?

Dr. Oganowski was instrumental in mentoring me and making sure that I had the support that I needed to be successful.

What do you like best about working in an Emergency Department managed by Premier?

I appreciate that Premier works so hard to keep me updated and continually educated so that I can perform my job to the best of my abilities. The support of the main office is outstanding whether facing personnel issues, questions regarding benefits, keeping abreast of continuing education opportunities or ensuring that all credentials remain current. I appreciate the documentation templates and other suggestions to make my dictating more complete and lower my risk of practicing medicine.

Would you encourage other Family Medicine doctors to work for Premier in Emergency Medicine?

Would I encourage other family physicians to work for Premier? Absolutely. I left Premier and assumed a solo practice for two years. My out-of-pocket expenses for my family’s health insurance was $1300 a month, I had to invest in my own retirement plan, and I had to constantly worry about how many patients were seen and if the business was running in the red or the black at the end of each month. I had a small staff, but I was still accountable for their salaries, as well as my own. The biggest lesson I learned was that my patients were not so different from my “regulars” at the ER. I learned that I am better suited to the ER environment, and though the work may be more stressful on some days, I never have to worry about how much money I will earn monthly or if I have seen enough patients to cover my salary. For me, not having these worries allows me to sleep better at night and enjoy quality time with my family.
