What factors made you decide to work in Emergency Medicine for Premier, rather than Family Practice?
After interviewing with Premier I felt they were a company I could have a career with—a company that would provide me with opportunities and continued challenges through partnership and advancement. I felt Premier was a stable company with long-term relationships with their client hospitals, as well as stable financially. I was excited about the growth possibilities, challenges, and opportunities that stability would provide. I moved from out of state five years ago to join Premier, and I have no regrets.
How did Premier help you with the transition from a Family Medicine setting to an Emergency Medicine setting?
Premier has multiple opportunities for the Family Practice physician to develop the necessary skills to practice Emergency Medicine. Our procedures course is an excellent opportunity to practice difficult airway and trauma procedures that a Family Practice trained physician may need some additional training in. Premier employs a good percentage of Family Practice trained physicians who can serve as mentors to an incoming Family Practice physician to help them become accustomed to Emergency Medicine. Premier is also involved with a one-year intensive internship program for Family Practice physicians that will enable them to develop the skills and confidence necessary to practice good Emergency Medicine.
What do you like best about working in an Emergency Department managed by Premier?
Premier provides an environment of stability for me. In a field where contracts can come and go, Premier has long-term relationships with most of its hospitals that allow me to have a sense of stability about my career. Premier encourages and rewards good medicine. When I work at different sites within Premier I know the other physicians at those sites will all have fairly similar practice styles. With our required CME and audits of our documentation and risk management Premier takes an active interest in the quality of medicine that is being produced. I see this as an advantage as it allows me to compare my style of practicing medicine to the accepted standards within the company.
